Making education for environmental sustainability more engaging, meaningful and impactful, through games!

EEHYC (European Environment and Health Youth Coalition – Lithuania), in cooperation with Insight_epd (Italy), CRISP (Germany), and SRC (Society for Responsible Consumption Romania), have been partners in the project “K2 Games – learning by playing”. funded by the Erasmus + Programme of the European Commission, with SRC leading the project as the coordinating organisation.

What was the purpose of the project?

To produce board and simulation games to tackle education on sustainability, the environment and health in a playful manner.

The impact of climate change, environmentally unsustainable practices, and their effect on health, is much more pressing towards the younger generation, that is the one who will be facing the consequences for much longer, as well as the one called to find solutions. It is therefore essential that young people are adequately trained on the topics of environmental sustainability, sustainable consumption and health.

“K2Games – Learning by playing”, a two-year strategic partnership project, promotes an innovative approach to education on sustainability, providing youth workers, educators and social workers with educational tools that are engaging, effective and fun, such as board games and simulation games.

The collaborating organizations aim to increase the awareness of games as effective tools for developing knowledge, skills and attitudes related to sustainability. The games produced by the K2 project have been designed through an innovative collaboration between game designers, youth workers and youth. The goal is for the games to be used in non-formal and informal contexts by youth workers, as well as to support the work of teachers and professors in formal contexts. They have been published online in five languages and are freely available as Open Educational Resources at www.k2games.info.

For more than 2 years, K2 Games has involved 25 people in the development of the games working simultaneously in four different countries to create two board games, five simulation games and a guidebook, all designed to fulfil the ultimate goal of the project: making education for sustainability, environment and health more engaging, meaningful and impactful.

The games are all free to download, print and play already. As a happy surprise, digital design files ready for 3D printing are now also being developed in Romania and will also be provided for free on the website! Some of the games will also be converted in a format that can be played fully online, while more surprises will for sure appear in the future!
